Here is an art portfolio work example that one of the previous students at New York Art Studio made in our class!
We brought this example to share with you a peep into an example of strong work, and talk a little about why it makes a good portfolio piece.
For this drawing, the student chose some found objects that had meanings to her, placed them in the corner of the table, and captured a specific view so that they create a triangular and dynamic composition. The diagonal line enhances that dynamic, alongside the very particular edge of the table that recedes into the wall.
The red headphone line becomes a good accent and pop of color that flows nicely across the composition, adding just enough tension that makes it all the more interesting.
The drawing also shows a strong understanding of depicting 3D space in 2D space, with good light and shadow relationships.
Especially for an undergraduate portfolio, colleges look for very specific criteria. Not only do they seek foundation skills, but also, a creative vision that would take them to the next level.
