Drawing in Color Pencil & Pen: College Art Portfolio Student Work

Drawing example

This is another student drawing example made in our Art College Portfolio Prep program!

For this drawing, the student utilized colored pencils and a pen to draw an imaginary landscape, demonstrating perspective, spatial depth, and color.

The viewpoint, looking from above towards a deep descent, features a spiral staircase leading to a waterfall. Natural elements intermingle along the outer spirals, adding another layer to the composition. These vibrant imaginary scenes starkly contrast with the monochromatic architectural landscape rendered in pen.

Drawing with a pen can present challenges, as marks stand out texturally and differ from a graphite drawing. Unlike graphite, where value can be built up by blending marks, pen drawing requires the use of various pens to achieve desired effects. However, pen drawing offers unique visual effects distinct from graphite.

Considerations for mark-making include the thickness, direction, and shape of each mark. The saturation of marks determines the value in pen drawing. Notice how the sides of the staircase are darker, with marks concentrated closely together. Dynamic mark directions add visual interest while maintaining consistency.

In terms of color, scarlet garlands diagonally cut through the composition, providing vibrant pops of color in low-saturated areas. The flow of the composition from the top to the lower center, and the creation of depth throughout, are also important aspects to consider.

In our Art College Portfolio Prep program, students receive individual guidance on projects that combine foundational drawing skills with conceptual and creative visions.
