Art College Portfolio Student Work Example: Experimental Painting/Sculpture

Art portfolio example

This is one of our student works done in our Art College Portfolio Prep program.

Just like the previous work that we introduced, it has many characteristics of a collage and has different colors, textures, and types of materials in one composition. It is painting-like and dimensional at the same time with various fabrics layered on top of each other. While the previous work has all the materials on its 2D plane, this work takes it more to a three-dimensional realm with those fabrics with different thicknesses.

The work also has the grid-within-a-grid relationship throughout the piece. Each section has its own narrative and color scheme; it has its own composition as a section but also echoes the larger whole to which it belongs–another huge characteristic of a collage!

The student was specifically drawn to the materiality and texture of different fabrics. Fabrics are conventionally deemed domestic. The piece maps each different section with threads.

Note the details of different sections, the superimposed layers almost form a quilt-like relationship with the threads mapping and dotting them together! This is an effective way to link the sections of a composition together especially when you are working with materials with varying color palettes and textures. Also note how the student drew in their own creative drawings on the fabric, merging them into part of the composition and fabric to embed their own stories.

Some might say that a collage is easy to make but it’s easier said than done. This is because realizing an idea into a visual work is not an easy job. In our Art College Portfolio Prep classes, our instructors will help you with a well-thought-out art project from start to finish, helping you make the compositional decisions that best work with your idea–or even coming up with an idea!
